Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA)

Ohio Means Jobs – Lawrence County

The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) will provide job seekers and workers with the high-quality career services, education and training, and supportive services they need to get good jobs and stay employed, and to help businesses find skilled workers and access other supports, including education and training for their current workforce. In recent years over 23,000 people annually turn to the OhioMeansJobs-Lawrence County One Stop Center to obtain good jobs and a career pathway. WIOA continues to advance services to these job seekers and employers.

Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, Adult Services, is designed to provide quality employment and training services to help eligible adults find and qualify for meaningful occupations and to help employers find the skilled workers they need to compete and succeed in business. The goals of this service are to increase employment and retention in unsubsidized, private sector employment. There are three types of services: Basic career services, individualized career services, and training services.

Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, Dislocated Workers Services, helps laid-off workers obtain new jobs with comparable wages. Addressing the needs of these workers help minimize the disruption of job transition on their own lives as well as that of their families and communities.

WIOA Youth Opportunity Services

WIOA AUTHORIZES THE FOLLOWING:

Out-of-school youth must be aged 16-24, not attending any school, and meet one or more additional barriers, which could include:

• • School dropout; within age of compulsory attendance but has not attended for at least the most recent complete school year calendar quarter
  • Holds a secondary school diploma or recognized equivalent and is low-income and is basic skills deficient or an English language learner
  • Subject to the juvenile or adult justice system
  • Homeless, runaway, in foster care or aged out of the foster care system, eligible for assistance under Section 477, Social Security Act, or in out-of-home placement
  • Pregnant or parenting
  • An individual with a disability
  • Low income person who requires additional assistance to enter or complete an educational service or to secure and hold employment.

In-school youth must be aged 16-21, attending school, low income, and meet one or more additional barriers, which could include:

• • Basic skills deficient
  • English language learner
  • An offender
  • Homeless, runaway, in foster care or aged out of the foster care system
  • Pregnant or parenting
  • An individual with a disability
  • A person who requires additional assistance to enter or complete an educational service or to secure and hold employment.
